Social media, young people and transparency of electoral processes were on the agenda of a workshop organized from 23-25 September in Erbil by the Iraq election commission with the support of the UN electoral assistance team.

Strengthening the Rights of Minorities

On 10 September 2013, the Article 125 Committee of the Iraqi Council of representatives, with support from UNAMI Office of Political Affairs and Human Rights Office, convened a roundtable on the draft Law for the protection of the rights of ethnic and religious minority communities. The dialogue was held at the Constitutional Review Committee conference hall at the Council of representatives (COR).

IRAQI YOUTH – KEY STATISTICS AND RESOURCES

A range of studies and surveys reveal that Iraqi youth face many challenges. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), together with the Government of Iraq, conducted a National Youth Survey in 2009 that provided the first comprehensive insight into the reality of being a young person in today’s Iraq. The United Nations, the Central Organization for Statistics, and the Kurdistan Region Statistics Office also produced the Iraq Knowledge Network Survey in 2011 which provides specific information on youth attitudes and issues.

UNFPA – LEADING THE WAY ON YOUTH

The demographic transition that the Iraqi population will undergo in the coming 20 years is at the core of the work of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The ‘youth bulge’ promises to create unprecedented opportunities and limitless challenges for Iraq. For this reason, Iraq’s National Development Plan (2010 – 2014) stresses the need to invest in youth, by “promoting the empowerment and capacity of Iraqi youth to face social challenges and to contribute to community development”.

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE: IRAQ’S NATIONAL YOUTH STRATEGY

This year, Iraq will launch its first ever National Youth Strategy (NYS). The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has been working closely with both the Ministry of Planning (MoP) and the Ministry of Youth and Sport (MoYS) to build a comprehensive and effective strategy.
